Pawsitive impact – Musti’s sustainable logistics in action
Reducing environmental impact is at the core of Musti’s sustainability efforts. Our long-term goal is to increase the share of renewable energy and reduce emissions from logistics. We have taken a significant step forward in 2025, with Musti’s transport emissions decreasing substantially.
Powering change with HVO
For its store deliveries in Finland, Kaukokiito, Musti’s partner in logistics, now uses HVO, a renewable diesel that can reduce transport emissions by up to 90 percent in the long term. Preliminary data from 2025 already show excellent results, with emissions decreasing by nearly 86 percent in January and February compared to 2024.
“The transition to HVO has enabled Musti to significantly reduce its emissions at a relatively low cost,” says Musti Group Logistics Manager Joonas Blomqvist.
In Sweden and Norway, trunk transports also use HVO, and Musti is actively exploring transitioning all transports in these countries to run on HVO or electricity.
The transition to low-carbon fuel is just one aspect of Musti’s environmental efforts in logistics. Together with Kaukokiito, Musti delivers approximately 30 000 pallets to stores in Finland annually. To reduce unnecessary transport weight, it is important that these loads contain only the optimal amount of packaging material, such as cardboard and plastic.
“We also optimize transport routes to the stores based on their needs, which increases efficiency in our logistics,” Blomqvist points out.
Partnering for a sustainable future in logistics
Many pet parents purchase Musti’s products online. To reduce the environmental impact of deliveries, products are packed in appropriately sized recycled cardboard boxes whenever possible. Musti will eliminate plastic packing materials used in online orders completely during 2025. Musti also collaborates with delivery services that have ambitious emission reduction goals, such as Posti Group.
Posti is committed to fossil-free transport by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2040. Posti delivers parcels using a fleet of over 500 electric vehicles, more than 100 gas-powered vehicles, and nearly 2,000 light electric vehicles.
In the future, Musti aims to offer pet parents the option to choose a low-carbon delivery method on its online store.
Recycling, reusing, reducing – Musti’s sustainable warehouses
Musti’s warehouses are fully optimized to save energy and reduce emissions. The warehouse temperature is set to a low level, and they operate using only renewable electricity. Musti focuses on efficient recycling practices in its warehouses and purchases only the necessary amount of cardboard and plastic for packaging.
“Our policy is to avoid unnecessary waste. For example, slightly damaged products are sold at a discounted price in our outlet stores, and all biowaste from our warehouses is converted into renewable energy,” Blomqvist says.
Some of Musti’s warehouses are specifically designed to facilitate emissions-free deliveries. For example, in Riihimäki, Finland, Musti’s transport partner has installed a charging station for an electric truck next to Musti’s warehouse.
